In Uganda, care for older and vulnerable adults is provided largely through home-based care and private caregiving. These settings rely on caregivers and nursing assistants able to respond to an emergency, and first aid and CPR are commonly part of their training.

The first-aid requirement

Private home-care employers commonly expect caregivers and nursing assistants to have first-aid and CPR training — CPR and basic emergency care — so that staff can act for a resident in distress. This is generally embedded in home-based-care caregiver courses or taken as a stand-alone certificate rather than fixed by a national residential-care standard.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid certificate is a common way to meet this expectation; it is in addition to the caregiver's occupational training and should be renewed periodically.
